Jury’s still out for me with regards to March. ‘In like a lion, out like a lamb’ said my Gran (or is that April?)
March, you are annoying because, in my head, you promise a lot but I often muddle you up with my distant memories of April and May (although, yes, I agree, the fault is entirely mine, not yours). I get way too over excited about all that warmth and abundant greenery but actually, you are very cold and lacking in leafage.
Yesterday, it snowed. Snowed.
‘It’s the blackthorn winter’, says my Dad
‘It’s bloody annoying’, says I
I have a creative alter ego called March.
March Foster-Found.
She’s a Victorian explorer, an intrepid sketcher of all things and, like her namesake month (and Victorian upbringing), is cold on the outside but full of abundant creative warmth on the inside. She’s very tall (‘quite manly, really, but a good way’ says Great Aunt Beatrice) and is the proud owner of a bespoke underskirt with huge integrated pockets, perfectly designed for carrying numerous sketchbooks and art materials (Oh, and also a small weapon, a foldable throwing knife, given to her by the Azande people on her last trip to the Sudan). She travels with a long suffering manservant who she refers to as ‘Ogden’, but whose name is actually John. A small, club footed chap, Ogden often struggles to keep up with her punishingly long stride and purposeful pace but is stoic and dauntless, nonetheless (plus, he carries the bags and adoringly champions everything she creates).
Do you have an alter ego? Would you like one?
I digress.
I know that March (both the month and the intrepid alter ego) would remind me that ‘patience is a virtue’ and we, in the UK, are on the very brink of Spring; the sap is rising, the birds are singing and a few daffs are tentatively revealing themselves. It’s the tipping point, my friend, and it’s leaning in our favour.
So here’s some Spring things…
Last week’s bird class was A JOY. Pure and simple.
If you fancy a fun, feathery drawing workshop, this would be a lovely treat over the weekend. Pay what you can for the recording with unlimited access and then…
Work along with company!
If you buy the class, you get free access to the work along this coming Thursday where we be drawing together, sharing work, having a chat about materials, drinking tea/coffee/wine etc etc. Thursday 20th March 7-8pm GMT
This seed packet class is also perfect for spring. Every year, I record a few of the seeds I have planted in my garden and use this easy ‘recipe’ to create a beautiful and colourful sketchbook page. The best thing about it is that you don’t really need to engage your brain AT ALL, just your eyes and your hands, so very good if you’re feeling a bit frazzled. xx
Also have a look at Seeds, Pots and Tiny Tools. A good one. Handy, illustrative. Good for cards and journals. Perfect if you like little things.

Spring Reading
I adored Darling by India Knight (read her here
) and completely fell in love with (almost) all the characters in the book who I will now miss, especially Davey and Uncle Matthew. I am just beginning Alison by which was recommended to me during the comics class with . Aside from the sparkling prose and captivating stories, both books also have the most beautiful covers, so, inspired by Lizzy Stewart, I may have to start keeping a mini drawn record of my annual reads especially if they look this good!Stay warm and well, Lucia xx
My first read since subscribing as I usually mindlessly clear my in box. I’m so glad I read this. You have brightened my day enormously. I need an alter ego. This is my plan. She will be the friend I need to take me by the hand and gently encourage me to take time to read and be creative. We all need alter an ego do we not? This is so beautifully written. Can wait to read more. Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️
Please could we have regular updates from the diary of March Foster Found? I have an overwhelming need for a bespoke pocketed underskirt now…
